My shoes
I am wearing a pair of shoes.
They are ugly, uncomfortable shoes.
I hate my shoes.
Each day I wear them, and each day I wish I had another pair.
Some days my shoes hurt so bad that I do not think I can take another step.
Yet, I continue to wear them.
I get funny looks wearing these shoes.
They are looks of sympathy.
I can tell in others eyes that they are glad they are my shoes and not theirs.
They never talk about my shoes.
To learn how awful my shoes are might make them uncomfortable.
To truly understand these shoes you must walk in them.
But, once you put them on, you can never take them off.
I now realize that I am not the only one who wears these shoes.
There are many pairs in this world.
Some women are like me and ache daily as they try and walk in them.
Some have learned how to walk in them so they don't hurt quite as much.
Some have worn the shoes so long that days will go by before they think about how much they hurt.
No woman deserves to wear these shoes.
Yet, because of these shoes I am a stronger woman.
These shoes have given me the strength to face anything.
They have made me who I am.
I will forever walk in the shoes of a woman who has lost a child.

Coming of age
All day we were peppered with questions as Keeli tried to make sense of the birthday event. What time is my birthday? Where is my birthday? Who is making my birthday? How many minutes until my birthday?
Keeli turned 5 today. Over the years, we have attempted to make birthdays about a celebration of time with family and building memories together rather than the expectation of gifts. Hopefully someday, she has many happy memories of today.

Tatum and Keeli created a sidewalk chalk mural celebrating Keeli's momentus occassions and announcing the big event to the entire neighborhood.
A large portion of the afternoon was devoted to cake baking and decorating. Everyone had a hand in stacking layers, frosting and sprinkling. Some even volunteered to eat the left over frosting. We left the combustible stuff to dad and the fire suppression to the birthday girl. We opened two presents, including a birthday card packed with cash and tiny sea shells from Nana Linda, who is currently in the Bahamas. Amazingly two of the shells survived the USPS.

Our little man
Eight years ago...
he entered our lives and changed them forever. Today he is entertaining, handsome, vibrant and challenging. He has the most creative though processes, doesn't let much deter him and always does things his way.

A Perfect 3
Happy Birthday to Keeli! She turns 3 today.
We spent the Labor Day holiday at the aquatic center, one of Keeli's favorite places. She was actually born on Labor Day, delivered just minutes before midnight making herself a holiday baby.
She is growing up to be a fantastic little girl. Her favorite toys are her half dozen baby dolls, Tatum's too small clogging shoes and anyone's cell phone. She enjoys eating broccoli, steak and anything made with chocolate.
She is still petite. She weighs 24 pounds and wears a size 2T clothing and 7 shoes. Obviously all the steak and chocolate isn't going directly to her waistline!

Another Year Wiser
Happy Birthday to our little man! He turned 6 years old today. Over the past year he has accomplished so much. He is very active in his martial arts class, he will advance to 1st grade in the fall, he learned to read and excels in math.
We had a very traditional celebration at home with our family. We enjoyed ice cream cake with a superhero theme, a few blazing candles and a little bit of off-key singing.

Birthday Girly
Tatum is now 8 years old. When did that happen? She is nearing the end of 2nd grade. She is excelling in reading and really likes to tackle math problems. She was recently tested for the NOVA program, if chosen she will get additional exposure to math and science curriculum during the school day. Of course her science-teacher-dad thinks this is a great idea, but she doesn't want any more homework.
She talked us into a party at the local bowling alley with her friends. So, we rented two lanes, one for her and her friends and one for Rikard and Keeli.

Before bowling she had a dance performance at a family fun event. She's the really short one second from the right. She loves her clogging!
